complex style lines in a pencil skirt -fashion construction workshop

A day in the workshop studio looking at fashion construction- design line style ideas ,for designing styled lines on a pencil skirt using combined shaping using panel lines ,yokes and darts and designing the skirt with two different colours ,fabrics for a contrast. In the fashion construction workshop we started by drawing round two mini half scale blocks ,making sure the front and back blocks over lapped each other at the seam to reduce the width of the hem ,tracing round marking in notches ,balance points, centre front and back ,hip line and closing the darts of our skirt blocks by the pivot and close technique.

mark the styled lines by drawing in a curved side panel-front to back making sure it has a lot of curve in the design so its easier to stitch round and measuring a perfect 90 degree angle for the bottom of the skirt making the side seam curve meet the hem.For the yokes  draw both the front and back yoke style line passing through the end of the closed dart (the point) and down the side panel making sure the measurements both added upon both sides.

when the draft pattern is drawn up ,then redraw over with more paper to make the final finished pattern by drawing in the different parts of the skirt ,once cut out can pin to fabric with the yokes on the fold line of the fabric so they come out as a whole piece and the same with the centre front and back but cut out two separate curved side panels.

I used a contrast of denham and calico together as a design idea,as its can give me ideas for the future- you can use any fabrics together.

pin and cut out the pattern pieces in fabric and pin the parts of the skirt right sides together-first with the yokes sewn onto the front  and back centre of the skirt using the cut notches /balance points to make it easier to stitch round the curves with a 1cm seam allowance .The last piece to sew on was the front and back side panel seams by pinning the semicircle lined up in the middle and lined up at the hem.once stitched i carefully pressed my skirt and modelled it on a mini mannequin.

i feel really proud of my first example of a skirt with complex styled lines and makes me feel confident that i could do this technique again without my tutors assistance, has given me lots of ideas of different styles and fabrics i could use for the future when designing a garment. its always great to learn something new each day and to challenge yourself .
